Hola, soy Sabrina!
I'm Sabrina Fluegel; I'm a Hispanic Linguistics PhD student & instructor at the University of Minnesota's Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies. As a linguist, I often say I speak "the language of media." That is, I study the intersection of language, culture, society, & media to understand how media reflects & represents larger societal issues. About my work My favorite way to educate about social & racial issues is via short-form video productions. Check out my Instagram Reels & TikTok videos, that have collectively reached over two million views. My most viral reel reached one million views in just under three months! My latest research publication (2021) about persuasive, socially exploitative marketing can be found in the Journal of Language Policy. My recent research on bilingual media, coming soon to the Journal of Multilingual & Multicultural development, focuses on how digital media marketers discuss cultural issues in bilingual media. My article highlights the societal, racial, & political issues at play in these online discourses that "package & sell" bilingualism as a marketable trait. My video production projects can be found on the webpages of journals such as the American Council on Foreign Language Teaching - Foreign Language Annals. Find my Instagram-reel style productions published by organizations such as Explore Minnesota Tourism. Watch a summary of my latest research:
